The Generative Brain

Funding programs

Prion research is funded by public programs, research networks and charities. The CJD Foundation funds grants from donations, Strides for CJD fundraising and memorial grants from families, and announced ten new awards on 28 January 2026.

This page lists the funding programs in the Atlas. Knowing who pays for a study helps a reader judge it. A grant is money for a project. It does not mean the project has produced results.

How does the CJD Foundation fund research?

The CJD Foundation awards research grants and fellowships. Its 2026 announcement, dated 28 January 2026, named ten new awards, eight grants and two fellowships, ranked by a Scientific Advisory Committee. The Foundation states that the awards are funded by donations, by fundraising through Strides for CJD and by memorial grants from families affected by prion disease.

The 2024 recipients worked on these topics:

  • an ADAM8-based gene therapy, at Case Western Reserve University
  • a tear fluid diagnostic test, in Gottingen, Germany
  • a small brain-penetrant molecule that lowers PrP, at the University of Toronto
  • the way prions first appear in mouse models, at the University of Toronto
  • brain organoids made from donors with sporadic CJD, at Rocky Mountain Laboratories
  • a protein-based gene therapy, at CIC bioGUNE in Spain
  • GPNMB as a possible drug target, at the University of Zurich

The Foundation page lists the awards. It does not report results.

What are Telethon career awards?

Fondazione Telethon runs the Dulbecco Telethon Institute, a career programme. It gives selected researchers in Italy a salary and research funding for five years, with possible extension.

Where can I find the terms for a particular grant?

Each call sets its own rules and dates. The funder’s page is the reliable place to check. For results of funded work, see Key papers, and for the vocabulary used in grant titles see the Glossary. Meetings where grantees report are on Events and conferences. The Atlas home lists the other sections.
