All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bibinagar, Hyderabad, Department of Neurology

AIIMS Bibinagar is a central government Institute of National Importance near Hyderabad, Telangana, set up in 2019 under Phase VII of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Its Department of Neurology is headed by Niraj Kumar, a movement disorder neurologist who earlier founded the Neurology department at AIIMS Rishikesh. The department matters to this map because the 2026 review Prion Disorders Update: An Indian Perspective was written entirely by its neurologists; that review states that RT-QuIC is not available in India and calls for a national prion registry. The institute has MRI and CT on site and runs a two-seat DM Neurology course, but no source opened describes a prion-specific service, CSF prion test or referral pathway at the department. Information only.

Key facts

  • The Union Cabinet approved an AIIMS at Bibinagar, Telangana, on 17 December 2018 at an estimated cost of about Rs 1,028 crore, and the first MBBS batch of 50 students started in August 2019.
  • The institute was established in 2019 as Phase VII of PMSSY; construction of the main campus began in June 2022 at an estimated cost of Rs 1,110.55 crore and was 87.4 percent complete in July 2026.

  • That review states that diffusion MRI is the most sensitive test, EEG periodic complexes support diagnosis, brain biopsy has been done in fewer than 50 Indian cases, RT-QuIC is not available in India, and a nationwide prion registry is needed.
  • The northern India prion case series (seven patients from AIIMS Rishikesh, 2018 to 2023) lists Niraj Kumar with a second affiliation at AIIMS Bibinagar Neurology.
  • Indexed papers with a Bibinagar Neurology affiliation are mainly on Parkinson disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, tic disorders, sleep and neuroinfection; no prion paper from the institute is indexed in Europe PMC, and the two Annals of Movement Disorders prion papers are not indexed there.
  • Papers from November 2023 onward list Kumar N at the Department of Neurology, AIIMS Bibinagar, and his November 2025 Muscle Nerve paper does the same.
