Labcorp Genetics (formerly Invitae)

Labcorp Genetics is the genetics business formed from the assets of Invitae, a San Francisco genetic testing company that filed for chapter 11 in February 2024 and whose select assets Labcorp bought for USD 239 million, closing on 5 August 2024. It runs the Invitae Hereditary Prion Disease Test (GTR000553809), a single gene PRNP test by NGS with deletion and duplication analysis, 10 to 21 day turnaround, on blood, saliva, buccal swab or DNA, ordered by clinicians. It offers no-charge family variant testing within 150 days and post-test counselling in the US and Canada. Whether it detects PRNP octapeptide repeat insertions is not stated. Information only.

Key facts

  • Invitae was set up in 2010 as a subsidiary of Genomic Health and spun off in 2012, with its base in San Francisco.
  • On 13 February 2024 Invitae filed voluntary chapter 11 petitions in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey to run a sale process supported by its senior secured noteholders.
  • Labcorp was named winning bidder on 24 April 2024, the court approved the bid on 6 May 2024, and the purchase consideration was USD 239.0 million for select assets.
  • Labcorp completed the acquisition on 5 August 2024, presenting it as a move into oncology and select rare disease genetic testing.
  • The parent is Labcorp Holdings Inc., which became the holding company of Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings on 17 May 2024.
  • NCBI registries list the lab as Labcorp Genetics (formerly Invitae) at 1400 16th Street, San Francisco; no public date for the name change was found.
  • The GTR record lists CLIA 31D2142534 and 05D2040778, CAP 8289311 and 8770489, New York PFI 8884 and 9392 and several other state licences; the test page marks it New York approved.
  • The prion test (Invitae code 03506, Labcorp number 900141) covers one gene, PRNP, for genetic CJD, GSS and FFI, using NGS sequencing plus deletion and duplication analysis of coding exons and nearby intronic bases.
  • Turnaround is 10 to 21 days, about 14 on average; specimens are EDTA blood, saliva, buccal swabs or genomic DNA.
  • Neither test page mentions octapeptide repeats: Invitae says indels over 15 bp are detected with possibly reduced sensitivity, and Labcorp lists repeat expansions among things not detected, so insertion detection is unconfirmed.
  • Codon 129 polymorphism status is not included in the primary report.
  • Ordering is by healthcare providers through the Invitae portal, paper forms or sponsored programs, and Invitae tests are still ordered via invitae.com rather than labcorp.com.
  • Blood relatives of a patient with a reportable variant can have family variant testing at no additional charge if ordered within 150 days of the original report.
  • Post-test genetic counselling is included in the test price for patients in the US, US territories and Canada.
  • No price is published for the prion test; outside the US non-US insurance is not accepted and a patient pay option is arranged through the billing team.
  • Non-US providers are directed to a local representative; no India specific channel was found.
  • GTR lists CPT 81479 while the Labcorp catalogue lists CPT 81404 for the same test.
  • In GTR the test sits in a PRNP result set alongside Fulgent, CeGaT, Blueprint and DNA Labs India tests.
