Observational studies and registries

Observational studies follow people with, or at risk of, prion disease over time without testing a treatment. The National Prion Monitoring Cohort in the UK has enrolled patients referred to the National Prion Clinic since 2008.

Observational studies record how disease develops, how tests behave and what care people receive. They give researchers the natural history that future trials need as a comparison. Taking part does not involve a study drug. The entries below describe individual studies, and trials covers interventional research.

The National Prion Monitoring Cohort is a UK study of patients seen at the National Prion Clinic, linked to the MRC Prion Unit. A 2022 paper describes it as a longitudinal prospective study that enrolled patients referred to the clinic between October 2008 and November 2020. Rapidly progressive patients are seen every 4 to 8 weeks and slowly progressive inherited disease every 6 to 12 months. Other studies are linked from this page, with entry rules set by each study team.
